The Marathon of Hope
On April 12, 1980, Terrance Stanley "Terry" Fox dipped his artificial leg in the Atlantic Ocean at St. John's, Newfoundland, and began an extraordinary journey that would inspire millions worldwide.
After losing his right leg to cancer at age 18, Terry embarked on the Marathon of Hopeβa cross-country run to raise money and awareness for cancer research. He ran the equivalent of a full marathon (42 kilometers) every single day for 143 consecutive days, regardless of weather, pain, or exhaustion.
Though cancer forced Terry to stop his run outside Thunder Bay, Ontario, after 5,373 kilometers, his impact was just beginning. The annual Terry Fox Run, held in over 60 countries, has raised more than $850 million for cancer research worldwide.
Terry Fox passed away on June 28, 1981, but his legacy of hope, courage, and determination continues to inspire people around the globe. This game is our tribute to his incredible journey and the millions of lives he touched.
